| Normandy - For More Than a History Lesson |
|
When mapping the itinerary for your next trip to France, don’t miss the beautiful region of Normandy. Although the historical sites from World War II still haunt the memories of many and peak the interest of history buffs, its wealthy culture, most delightful cuisine and quaint small towns attract visitors from all walks of life. Begin your tour with a stop at Rouen. It’s this beautiful city that inspired Monet with icons like the Notre Dame Cathedral. It’s also a fantastic place where to shop for out-of-the ordinary souvenirs, handicrafts and gifts. Of course Le Mont-Saint Michel is a must. Visible from kilometers away, this imposing Benedictine Abbey is among the most recognized and photographed landmarks in the world. Continue to Bayeux, the first town to be liberated when the beaches of Normandy were stormed by the allied forces. Visit the museum that now houses the tapestry made in honor of William the Conqueror. Observe its unique details displaying the 11th century Battle of Hastings. Don’t miss Caen. It’s an important part of D-Day’s history. It was, after all, one of the crucial locations for the victory of the Allied Forces. Journey to Longues-sur-Mer where the memorials speak loud of the events that took place back then. See the original German weapons, still in the same spot as they were on June 6, 1944. Though sad, don’t forego the American Cemetery. It’s a beautiful and tranquil spot on a gorgeous plateau. Marvel in the breathtaking vistas of Omaha Beach and the Channel. Walk over to the monument built in honor of the missing soldiers, and view the impressive marble crosses marking the graves of the brave Americans who died in the war. If time allows, include Pointe du Hoc, hosting a dignified memorial to a group of two hundred and sixty rangers. History tells that this team of men captured the German troops, ending their control of the area. Unfortunately, over half of them perished in the effort. Before you leave, treat yourself to the local restaurants for fabulous French specialties. Having stepped back in time, you’ll have gained a new appreciation for the events that took place in this beautiful region. Include Normandy on your travels through France.
