Rivaling the larger cities of Spain for a place in the limelight, Toledo boasts one of the top vacation spots in Europe. Showcasing the treasures of centuries past, it’s been described as one of Europe’s most magnificent destinations and one you ought not to miss. Still unchanged today and reflecting its medieval splendor, the town of Toledo sits just forty-two miles south of Madrid. But no matter how many books reveal its legends and artistic value this is one journey that must be experienced in person. The best way to capture its essence is by walking through the narrow paths. And upon crossing the entrance that welcomes you to this “national monument,” take time to admire the intricate gates. See the Alfonso VI doorway built in the 11th century a stunning example of Arabic design. As you look upward, you’ll witness the Alcazar, a fortification displaying four towers that watch majestically over the city and the Tagus River. For the locals, it represents a symbol of endurance as it withstood a tenacious siege during the Spanish Civil War. When you continue on, you’ll observe a diversity of architectural styles that range from Baroque to Gothic. You’ll encounter synagogues, cathedrals and mosques that reflect the fact that Christians, Jews and Moors lived here in harmony at one time. Make sure to stop by El Greco Museum to view the astounding works of art he created during the 16th century including “A View of Toledo.” And don’t be surprised if the town looks the same way it did on this painting. To find a bigger collection of masterpieces, the Tavera Hospital should be on your itinerary. Built in 1541, it now hosts an impressive art gallery with iconic paintings like Titian’s “Emperor Charles V,” El Greco’s “Baptism of Christ” and other superb pieces. After delighting in the mélange afforded by the town’s history, treat yourself to one of the most extraordinary pleasures. Shop for out-of-the ordinary items only produced in Toledo. Head out to Bermejo a shop where artisans create the delicate Damascenes (black steel or silver inlaid with gold thread). Delight in sweet Marzipan or sample the locally produced Manchego cheese. One must agree that Toledo is without a doubt a must see.
