Warm weather, relaxing spas, desert sands and beautiful hiking trails make the Dead Sea and Masada two of the most distinctive Israeli tourist attractions.
The lowest spot on Earth, the Dead Sea, is one of the most unique travel destinations in the world. Sandwiched between Israel and Jordan, this body of water is so salty that animals cannot live in it, which is where it gets its name. However, the area is far from dead. There is an array of resorts and spas where you can pamper yourself with famous Dead Sea mud and bathe in water so thick you float. The mineral content of the water of the Dead Sea is known for its healing powers and will invigorate you physically and emotionally. Aside from dipping in the sea itself, there are a large number of pools, hot springs and waterfalls in the surrounding the area. These springs remain hot all year round and have great health benefits. The most popular areas for tourists to stay in the Dead Sea are the desert oases of Ein Bokek and Ein Gedi. These areas are ripe with hostels, hotels and health spas. Though sunbathing and Dead Sea dipping are the most popular attractions, there are also a number of beautiful hiking trails in Ein Bokek and Ein Gedi. Masada National Park is a short drive from the Dead Sea resorts. The mountaintop fortress of Masada is one of Israel’s most popular tourist attractions. Visitors can ride to the top in a cable car or hike up the mountain’s “snake path”. One of the best time’s to hike up is early morning, before the sun has begun to rise. The view of the sunrise from the top of Masada is one of the most picturesque views you’ll find. During the months of April through October, Masada hosts a sound and light show on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This spectacular show recounts Masada’s history with pyrotechnics, lights and sound. Not far from Masada is Qumran National Park, a series of ancient caves. Qumran is home to the oldest biblical documents ever found - the Dead Sea Scrolls - and is a must-see site for anyone interested in religion and history. Tourists in Israel looking to relax and surround themselves with the beauty and mystery of the desert shouldn’t miss out on the Dead Sea and Masada.
