As you get close, journey northwest across the Urubamba River.  Follow the trails that lead up the mountains and before you know it you’ll have arrived in Machu Picchu.  This most incredible site is believed to have been created thirty-six thousand years B.C.  You may reach it by train if so desired.  However, if at all possible, don’t deprive yourself from following the Inca Trail through scenic gorges, paths and stunning landscapes.  The architectural wonders you’ll observe are quite intricate and a feat of human endeavor.  After all, the topography of the site is uniquely challenging.  Make time to visit the town showcasing picturesque churches and monuments, markets and restaurants.  

As you travel throughout, you’ll come across tribes that continue to follow in their ancestors’ traditions.  If times allows, witness the Inti Raymi, a ritual for paying tribute to the sun god.  Legend has it that the deity’s offspring came from Lake Titicaca and founded Cusco as well as the Inca nation.  So you can probably imagine the mystique and intensity of the ceremony.
