Hit the Outdoors at Great Smokey Mountain National Park

With 850 miles of scenic trails perfect for the hiker within, a population of some of the most unique animals in the world and peaks ranging from 876 to 6,643 feet, the Great Smokey Mountain National Park makes a great vacation spot for those looking to hit the outdoors.

Many visitors choose to spend a night or two in one of the many camp grounds scattered throughout the park and spend their days hiking the many trails.  The Great Smokey Mountain National Park offers a variety of trails for all different hiking skill levels.  Hike on your own, or go with a guide.  If you aren’t the camping type, there are also a variety of lodges you can stay along the Appalachian Trail as well as a large selection of hotels in the towns surrounding the park, including Gatlinburg, Tennessee and Cherokee, North Carolina.
While hiking through the park, notice the unique natural features including the highest point in the park, the summit of Clingmans Dome.  The Great Smokey Mountain National Park is also home to 10,000 different species of plants and animals including a huge number of lungless salamanders and one of the largest black bear populations, with over 1,800 black bears on park grounds.  The park is has 200 bird species, 50 species of fish, 66 types of mammals and more.
Though hiking is one of the largest attractions of the park, many visitors also take part in fishing.  The park’s waters are home to a large number of fish species, and brown trout and rainbow trout are particularly popular among visitors who like to fish.  Horseback riding, bicycling and water tubing are also popular on the park grounds.
