The Church of Santa Maria Novella

Santa Maria Novella is a true showcase of Italian Renaissance christian artwork. It is one of the oldest Gothic structures in Tuscany but various of its elements were rebuilt during the renaissance era.
The Duomo

This is perhaps the most famous building in Florence and one of the most famous churches in the world. Skyline photos of the city of Florence are rarely seen without the Duomo dominating them. When visitors walk up the dome of the Duomo they can see the Last Judgment frescoes. The dome’s architect is Bruneleschi. It is said that what inpired Bruneleschi is a desire to compete with his bitter rival Lorenzo Ghiberti, who designed the Duomo’s gilded doors.

The Medici Burial Church

This church contains the famous Michelangelo sculptures. The church was rebuilt by Bruneleschi in the fifteenth century and contains the tombs of Giuliano and Lorenzo Medici. The sculptures offer a unique opportunity to view Michelangelo’s work in its original environment and setting.
